About
United County Journal is an English-language almanac about countryside landscapes and rural life. It looks at field patterns, paths, seasonal change, buildings and the small signs by which a place becomes legible. It is for curious readers, walkers, gardeners and anyone who wants to notice more in familiar country ground.
What we cover
Our subjects begin with things a reader can see, compare or learn about at an unhurried pace: the shape of a field, the material of a roof, the course of a path or the marks a season leaves. We explain terms and background without treating every landscape as alike.
How we look
We favour close observation, clear distinctions and useful context over sweeping claims. A landscape may have several histories at once, and a visible feature does not always tell its whole story. We make that uncertainty plain rather than filling gaps with guesswork.
Who it is for
You need no specialist knowledge to read United County Journal. Our pieces are for people who enjoy the countryside as a lived-in, worked and changing place, whether they know a particular landscape well or are learning how to look at one.
